When shopping on a budget, it’s always a great idea to check out the philosophy of a ‘capsule wardrobe’. Popularised by fashion advice TV series Gok’s Fashion Fix, the capsule wardrobe is usually the secret up the sleeves of fashionistas who like to look good but cannot afford to break-the-bank doing so.
At a glance, a capsule wardrobe is a mini wardrobe with really versatile pieces that you completely love to wear.
Building a capsule wardrobe is easy when you know how. All it takes is to select a few essential items, which you can easily mix-and-match to generate more outfits for your money each season.
Remember, the ‘capsule wardrobe’ idea primarily rests upon the notion that less is more.
Shopping on a budget: save time and money
You can spend less time shopping and deciding what to wear with a capsule wardrobe. It represents more time and energy for what really matters and less money spent on clothes that never get worn.
If you’re going to spend money on clothes, don’t forget that basics will never go out of style, which means you won’t regret investing in them.
The key to finding these perfect items is to plan ahead and around two or three neutral colours – such as off-white, navy or grey – and to stick to classic key pieces, which can be reworked over and over each season.
Building a capsule wardrobe
A good way to start is by identifying three primary outfit categories that are most relevant to your lifestyle, such as:
- Active: gym, sports, kids, etc.
- Work: office, meetings, etc.
- Fun: restaurants, night out, etc.
Then, once you identify your primary outfit categories, you can select 9 tops, 5 trousers, and 5 shoes. Choose these items based on three main aspects:
- Their usefulness in each of your outfit categories;
- How well the items fit today;
- How easily you could create an outfit with them based on the other pieces in your capsule.
Finally, after choosing these items, it’s time to go shopping for items to add to your capsule wardrobe.
There will always be an item that you need to make your wardrobe complete; it’s human nature to want something more, something new. However, try to incorporate existing items of your current wardrobe, as this can potentially save you money and simplify life.
