There are plenty of things that weigh heavy on our minds, not least the burdens associated of financial concerns. Sometimes you just need to take a step back and consider how you can improve your state of mind to make the best decision for you. There are countless ways you can do this, but here are five that are always worth considering.
Have fun, as a conscious decision
It sound easier than it is, but it’s still a simple notion: make sure that if you’re doing something with your spare time, it can be fun and enjoyable. You don’t need to do anything extreme like a base jump or watch a Premier League game; even sitting on the sofa watching Netflix or going for long walks can be exactly what you need. Put it at the front and centre of your mind.
Taking a break really works
Sometimes, you can’t take a break because you’re busy – at least, not a long one. But going for a five-minute stroll or sitting down with a coffee and a book – or even your phone on Reddit – can be all you need. Take some time to evaluate what’s going on around you, and keep track of how you feel. Don’t delve deep into how you are; think about what you’re looking forward to, and what you’re happy with already.
Get out and exercise!
Given we’ve mentioned walking twice now, the third point may come as no surprise, but it’s a well-known fact that exercise makes us happier. It doesn’t need to be an activity that makes us lose weight, or tone us up; it just needs to be a thing that gives us a release, takes our mind off things, and releases those endorphins that help us to feel a lot, lot happier. Take your partner, friends, kids, whoever – make it an activity to share.
Eat well – and healthily, when you can
Don’t throw yourself into food. It’s a pretty common thing for people to take comfort in, but no sooner have you had a treat than you feel guilty about enjoying it. You can eat well, and healthily (most of the time, at least!) and get the same feeling of contentment. But don’t ever deny yourself the things you love – and don’t slip into fad diets, as they can only have an effect on anxiety!
Be mindful of yourself
There’s a major difference between “watchful” and “mindful”; the first is basically an issue of being wary of everything, while the second is looking at what affects the things around us, and taking stock. Be mindful of the things around you, but don’t concern yourself solely with the present, or even the past – also look to the future, as that’s the one thing you’ll always be in control of!
