If the rest of the summer continues as it has, then we won’t blame you for wanting to pack your bags and head off in search of some late summer sun.
Is there anything better than spending a week sunning yourself, drinking cocktails and unwinding, knowing that you’ve escaped a week of grey, miserable rain back home?
Plus, heading off in the late summer means that the streets, beaches and bars aren’t quite so packed – giving you the chance to soak up the sights and taste the best food on offer, without having to fight through crowds of people.
However, we know that beach holidays aren’t for everyone. That’s why we’ve put together a range of late summer getaways that suit everybody – from the homebody that loves a UK getaway to the culture junkie or beach bum.
The best late summer getaways
For the homebodies (and surfers)
Cornwall is a bit of an anomaly in the UK. For a start, it’s actually hot. Then you’ve got the fact it has great beaches (with great surf) and great views.
And in the late summer, it stays warm all day; just right for wandering around the picturesque towns, catching some waves and heading out on coastal adventures. Then, as the sun goes down, grab a blanket and start a fire on the beach with some local cider (of course if you are allowed to!).
A perfect British holiday.
For the culture junkies
Barcelona has just about everything you could possibly want from a holiday – great beaches, a great city, culture, history, incredible food, a lively nightlife, hidden treasures and – of course – a great climate.
And in the late summer, Barcelona is perfect. The uncomfortable heat of the summer has peaked and is tapering off to a constant, much-hotter-than-the-UK-but-not-uncomfortable temperature, giving you the perfect climate to explore the incredible parks of Gaudi, take a stroll down La Rambla and – if you’re feeling adventurous – climb to the summit of Montjuïc. (Be warned, the climb isn’t as easy as it sounds.)
At the end of the day, treat yourself to some fresh paella, some Sangria and watch the famous Magic Fountain.
For thrifty romantics
Late summer is the perfect time for a romantic getaway, isn’t it? The temperature is great for long, aimless evening strolls and the towns are just right for finding a quiet table or seat in the bar. And the light in the early evening is just right for those jealousy-inducing Facebook statuses and Instagram uploads.
And there’s no better place for a wallet-friendly romantic getaway than Budapest.
It has everything you could possibly want from a late summer romantic break. Great climate, world-class spas, breath-taking scenery, one-of-a-kind ruin bars and an incredible atmosphere.
For Game of Thrones fanatics
Winter is coming, so head to Dubrovnik in the late summer to catch the last of the summer sun.
If you’ve ever fancied yourself as Hand of the King (or Queen) or perhaps fancied the Iron Throne all for yourself, there’s no better place to head in the late summer than Dubrovnik – it’s the setting for King’s Landing in Game of Thrones, but it’s also just a breath-taking place to go; full to the brim with boutiques, cafes, Mediterranean gardens, tiny bars and jewellery shops.
For sun-chasing beach bums
Gran Canaria, the Canary Islands
Gran Canaria is the only place you need to look if you’re after the last of the late summer sun. For wallet-friendly trips, there are end-of-season all-inclusives, while away from the beaten track there are villas and sandy beaches.
Either way, this is the prime location for grabbing that book you’ve been meaning to read, ordering a cocktail and putting your feet up.
(Pssst. If you’re wondering about how to pay for your holidays, you can get the skinny on that in one of our recent posts. And if you’re feeling extra frugal, here’s a guide to travelling on a shoestring.)
