UEFA Euro fans: can you afford to go abroad to support your team?
For Euro fans, attending the European Championship is the experience of a lifetime. However, do you know how much does it cost to support your football team abroad?
The 2016 UEFA European Championship is taking place in France from 10 June to July and the matches are being played in 10 stadiums in 10 cities: Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Paris, Saint-Denis, Saint-Étienne, and Toulouse.
Being a football fan does not come cheap, specially if it involves travelling to another country.
Regarding the common expenses, the Money Advice Service stated:
“Buying tickets is the most common expense, with 28% paying for entry, and 23% paying to travel to the event. More than one in ten (12%) fans are even willing to pay extra for overnight accommodation. Food and drink and satellite TV packages are also popular pitfalls for sports fans’ purse strings.”
Also, according to the bookmaker Ladbrokes, England fans will pay an average £563 – including travel and accommodation – to support their team, £100 more than what the local fans are expected to spend.
How Euro fans are covering costs?
“While more than six in ten (68%) people use their current account to cover costs, many turn to alternatives to feed their sporting passion. Over a quarter (27%) have used their credit card, and 18% have dipped into their savings. Borrowing money from friends or family (7%) or payday loans (6%) were also used to cover costs.” Source: the Money Advice Service.
