5 spring home improvement projects you can get started on this bank holiday
Winter is finally over and the sun seems to be thinking about coming out for longer than a few days, which has got us planning some spring home improvement projects we can’t wait to work on.
So, we thought we’d share a few spring home improvement projects you can get started on this bank holiday weekend, without breaking the bank.
Bamboo’s Top 5 Spring Home Improvement Projects (That Won’t Break The Bank)
Project #1: Check (and repair) your roof for leaks
Cost: Free (+ extra if you have to repair any small problems)
For obvious reasons, your roof is a pretty important part of your home. Nobody wants to be nodding off to sleep to be treated to the drip-dropping of rain on their face.
Even worse, water leaking in through the roof can cause damage inside your walls or in your loft that can lead to bigger problems like rot and mould.
To assess the situation, take a look at your roof from the ground and see if you can spot any shingles or tiles that might have been blown out of place by those strong winter winds.
Then, if you spot problems from ground level — or just want to take a look — get a ladder and carefully climb up on the roof. (Make sure somebody foots the ladder to be safe.) Small holes are easy to patch up, but a bigger job might need the help of a professional if you’re not a DIY whizz.
Here’s a great video from Fix My Roof on how to do quick DIY repairs on your roof:
Project #2: Paint your front door
Cost: Less than £30 (for the paint and filler)
This might sound like one of those quick Spring home improvement projects — just give the door a lick of paint and get back to relaxing — but it’s actually a bit more complex than that.
To give the door a nice, smooth finish, you need to rub the door down, remove all flakey paint, fill in any chips and dents, give it a coat of primer and then give it a lick of paint.
However, the result is more than worth it. Not only can it transform how your house looks, but if you’re thinking about selling soon, it can also help you sell your house quicker .
Project #3: Clean your path or decking
Cost: Free
There’s nothing worse than that gunky slime that gathers on your decking and pavement over the course of winter.
(Actually, there is. Slipping over it…)
This job is super fun and helps get your garden ready for the summer months with the sunbathing, BBQs and lounging in the sun: grab a jet wash (or borrow one, if you haven’t got one) and go to town on your decking or path.
Don’t rush it though! You can have plenty of fun drawing pictures and scribbling stuff with the washer before you clean it off thoroughly!
Project #4: Clear your guttering
Cost: Free
All those autumn leaves and blockages that gathered up over the colder months (when, let’s be honest, you didn’t want to be up a ladder) are going to need clearing, so grab a ladder, clear them out and prevent blockages, overflow and water damage.
Here’s a handy guide from B&Q on how to do it.
Project #5: Add insulation:
Cost: Up to £250 if you DIY it. (More if you pay a professional)
If you found your house was a little chillier this year or your heating bills were higher than you expected, it’s probably time to insulate your loft.
And, according to the Renewable Energy Hub, the cost of insulating your loft will pay for itself within two years because of the amount of energy you save.
But, even better, the recommended level of loft insulation is 270mm. Now, while that sounds a lot, there’s a strong possibility that you’ve already got some insulation in your loft, so you might be able to save even more money by using some insulation to top up the thickness of your current insulation for a fraction of the cost (and all of the money-saving benefits)
There you have it, 5 easy spring home improvement projects that you can get done with time to spare this bank holiday weekend and give you all the excuses you need for a well-earned day with your feet up!
