Signs that can help you spot a scammer

  • Promises of easy or free money, especially during financial hardship.
  • Encouragement to take out a loan with the promise of quick repayment or high returns.
  • Claims of affiliation with the loan company or having an “insider” who can write off your loan.
  • Requests to send loan funds to a third party or split the money.
  • Pressure to invest in cryptocurrency or other schemes with unrealistic returns.
  • Being told to change your name by deed poll to avoid loan repayment.
  • Upfront payment requests for loan approval.
  • Requests for remote access to your computer or device.
  • Requests for sensitive personal information, such as: ID documents, video ID verification or bank login credentials.
  • Exclusive communication via WhatsApp, avoiding official channels.
  • Use of social media ads promising “get rich quick” opportunities.
  • Being targeted due to a good credit score and told you can “make free money.”
  • Feeling pressured or rushed, especially if something doesn’t feel right.

Stop. Challenge. Protect.

Before taking out any form of loan please Take Five and consider your circumstances.

STOP – Take a moment to stop and think before parting with money or information.

CHALLENGE – Does it seem legitimate? It is okay to reject, refuse or ignore any request. Only criminals will try and rush you or pressure you for immediate payments.

PROTECT – Contact your bank immediately if you think you have been scammed or you can report it to Action Fraud.

top up

  • A top-up loan increases your overall debt and repayment period.

  • Make sure the new repayment fits comfortably within your budget.

  • The application for a top-up loan involves a full credit check and affordability assessment and will result in another hard search on your credit file.

  • A top-up loan may not be the most cost-effective choice for additional borrowing. It is important to carefully assess and compare all available options.
