British Gas offers a new FreeTime tariff to give customers the cheapest electricity and gas deal.
The company is to offer free electricity every Saturday or Sunday from 9am-5pm, to two million customers who have smart meters installed.
Check if you’re eligible for this British Gas deal
You could do the washing for free at weekends if you agree to manage your account online. This is required as your online account gives you access to their interactive online tool.
If your home does not have a smart meter installed, British Gas can install it for you free of charge. They will check whether your property is eligible for smart meters as part of the sign-up process.
If your property is not eligible for smart meters you can be added to their waiting list so that when your property does become eligible they can contact you to arrange the upgrade to smart meters.
According to British Gas, consumers should see savings of about £60 a year.
Experts said consumers might still find a better deal elsewhere
Independent energy expert Ann Robinson states:
“Consumers need to think about the small print, shop around and see if there’s a better deal out there.”
By shopping around when it’s time to renew your contract, you could save yourself hundreds a year with just an hour’s work. Read more about how switching electricity providers can save you hundreds.
However, she welcomed the innovative use of smart meters, saying people might be prepared to change habits to save money.
According to GOV.UK website, energy companies are installing smart meters in homes in England, Scotland and Wales, and most homes should have one by 2020.
“Smart meters bring a wide range of benefits. For example:
- Smart meters give you near real time information on energy use – expressed in pounds and pence
- You will be able to better manage your energy use, save money and reduce emissions
- Smart meters will bring an end to estimated billing – you will only be billed for the energy you actually use, helping you budget better
- Easier switching – smoother and faster to switch suppliers to get the best deals”
If you are interested in getting a smart meter now, shop around and contact different energy companies to see what their plans are. You can find some suppliers’ smart meter pages on the Smart Energy GB website.
